  1. The child slave labor issue with chocolate is actually real, but it’s in Africa, not South America. Roughly half the cocoa in the world comes from the Ivory Coast, where child labor is used extensively, and maybe 10% of that comes from plantations that use slave labor.

    Most confectioners (like Hershey) get their cocoa from wholesale suppliers that buy beans from all over and resell them in large mixed lots, so it’s actually impossible to say any given company definitely sells chocolate grown via slave labor, or what percentage of the chocolate bar in your hand may be slave-grown.

    Not saying Omega’s friend wasn’t being a huge (and ill informed) pratt, just that actually is an existing problem separate from said ill-informed prattness.
