  1. Adventures of Baron Munchausen’s my personal favourite in terms of 80s fantasy. Although accounting for more modern films I think I prefer Pan’s Labyrinth. Incidentally, welcome to the world of living in a country made famous by high fantasy (although you don’t have to contend with earthquakes on a daily basis).

  2. My favorite fantasy movies fall into the 1980s sword & sorcery category: Conan the Barbarian, Krull, Beastmaster, etc.

  3. It’s better than midichlorians, it’s that dragons produce hydrogen as part of their digestion process, and that a.) gives them enough buoyancy for light, and B.) works with a naturally occuring-flint-and-steel in the back of the jaw they can use to ignite said hydrogen after burping it up.

  4. And its no so much ‘there is no god’ in the golden compass, in those books it’s more like God’s just…flawed like humans are (they lie, for example: they didn’t create reality, they were just the first sentient thing in it) and basically senile, to the point where they’re not even the one in charge of heaven any more.

God technically exists in The Golden Compass, they’re just kind of a jerk and not as all-seeing, all-knowing, or all-powerful as they’ve told people they are, and therefore not really worthy of the reverence they get.

It’s a very interesting interpretation, I wish more fantasy stories played with monotheistic or supposedly-monotheistic theology.

  5. Mahan was a pretty good guest, all in all. And honestly, it’s an unusual choice, but Kazam is definitely a fantasy movie. It’s a totally different genre at the same time, but it’s still fantasy. And honestly not that far removed from The Neverending Story in that regard, if you think about it. (modern western world clashes with fantastical elements, starring a little boy)

Regarding the idea of a high fantasy movies with characters who are actually high… isn’t that “Your Highness” aka “The one with Natalie Portman in a thong”? ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyI2lUcvfhg )

Dragonbus…. oh, to be an artist! I can see it in my mind’s eye. If only I could get it out…
